- We are all aware that digital technologies have changed the way Canadians live, work and play, but the many economic and social benefits of this new landscape include challenges to do with personal security, cyber threats, Internet access and other issues.  For business to thrive in the 21st century, they need to be able to adapt and maximize the opportunities connectivity provides while taking the proper steps to enhance cyber security to prevent monetary losses, keep valuable intellectual property safe, and protect the privacy of consumers and suppliers.

Small and Medium Enterprises make up 98% of Canadian companies, and according to StaySafeOnline.org, 71% of data breaches happen to small businesses and nearly half of all small businesses have been the victim of a cyberattack. Most recently the COVID situation has further highlighted the vulnerability of businesses as they pivoted to quickly to virtual working environment.  Given the scope and complexity of the issue, small businesses can feel overwhelmed in trying to address cyber security, and not know where to begin. Even for those who may be aware of cyber threats, many small businesses lack the training or specialist IT resources needed to respond.  That is why the Government has taken an important step to help small businesses protect themselves against cyber threats with the CyberSecure Canada program.  CyberSecure Canada is a voluntary cyber security certification program that will help small and medium-sized organizations achieve a baseline level of cyber security, giving their customers greater confidence and providing these organizations with a competitive advantage and customers with greater confidence in their online activity.
